I have put at least 25,000 miles on my mountaineer since getting it in September 2011. I ride at least twice a day 6 days a week on rough mountain trails, I do have several different horses (Rockies Mountains, Paso Finos, Peruvian Horse) that I alternate between riding. I have also used it on Drafts and Draft crosses as well as Quarter Horses.
This saddle fits them all great and is the most secure and comfortable saddle of any type I have ever owned.
I compete in ACTHA on My Rocky Mountain Horses and also my Paso Fino; Zoey de Apache Pasador who has competed in 20 ACTHA events since February 2015 and has placed in every one, winning 7 out of the 20 and already has 109 points, which has earned him the bronze, silver, and gaited medals.
I always ride in my Mountaineer at competitions and have had fellow competitors ask to try it on their horses to see how it feels. They always get off wanting to know how they can get one just like it!
I have several Steele Saddles so that my friends can ride with me and I switch up, but the Mountaineer is my favorite!

From the demo to my custom Steele Platinum Trail Saddle I couldn’t be happier with the quality and fit for both the horse and myself. While you were making my new Steele trail saddle, the demo went on a 2 week trail ride in the Carson National Forest and was a huge success with several riders saving pennies and selling old saddles to get their own Rolls Royce of saddles, the Steele Trail Saddle. The Steele demo saddle was used on a 14.1 hand paso, a 15.1 hand paso, a 15 hand paso, and a 16 hand foundation quarter horse. Each horse was rode between 3-10 hours during the day with this saddle. Not one sore back or rubbed spot. Plus I never had to use a breast strap or crupper to keep my Steele saddle in place riding through the Rocky Mountains. All the other riders had to use both breast strap and crupper as we bushwhacked with our horses through the Carson National Forest.
My Steele Trail Saddle has also been used on a 14.1 hand petit Paso, a 15 hand Missouri Fox Trotter, a 15.1 Tennessee Walker and a quarter horse. This one trail saddle fit each horse with no signs of rubbing, back soreness or other signs of discomfort. Plus, I never once experienced knee or back soreness. As I was getting ready to begin my ride from California to Texas, I knew I would need a special saddle. I have a lot of trouble with my left knee which has been broken twice and with my right leg which was broken two years ago. I needed to find a saddle that had a free swinging fender to allow a full range of motion for my legs. I found it in the Steele Moutaineer. It is an endurance saddle and mine was in the western style. It was also a concern that I was riding a Quarter Horse with low withers and a wide back. This saddle was perfect. I had full contact with my horse because there is not a log of heavy skirting as on my western saddle. In combination with a saddle pad that had full side silicone gel inserts, it was a fabulous fit on my horse. I never had a single minute of pain in my legs, even after grueling 25 mile days in extremely rugged terrain. My horse was never sore backed from the saddle. It has a deep seat and more than enough dee rings to attach additional gear. The saddle stayed in place no matter how steep the trail was up or down.
